Samsung updates Exynos 5 Octa chip with six-core GPU

Even more GPGPU power CHIPMAKER Samsung has announced an updated eight-core Enynos 5 Octa processor for tablets that features a six-core Mali T-628 GPU.Samsung has been the first ARM vendor to ship consumer products using an eight-core processor that makes use of ARM's Big Little configuration. Now the firm has announced an update for its Exynos 5 Octa processor with a beefed up ARM Mali GPU sporting six cores that support OpenCL 1.1 for GPU computing.Samsung said its Exynos 5 Octa has four Cortex A15 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, making up the Big part of the chip, while four Cortex A7 cores running at 1.3GHz round out the Little portion of the configuration. However the firm's use of six Mali T628 GPU cores is particularly important as it enables full profile OpenCL GPU computing, something that application developers can use to not only improve application performance but also help devices use battery power more efficiently.Samsung VP of System LSI marketing Taehoon Kim said, "Demand for richer graphic experiences is growing rapidly nowadays. In order to meet that demand from both OEMs and end users, we developed this processor which enables superb graphical performance without compromising power consumption."Samsung said its Exynos 5 Octa processor can drive displays of up to 2560x1600 resolution, which is not surprising since the firm's quad-core Big Little implementation used in Google's Nexus 10 tablet powers a display with the same resolution. The firm said that the Exynos 5 Octa has memory bandwidth of 14.3GBps and supports dual-channel 993MHz LPDDR3 memory.
